It is common to observe condensation on window panes, especially in winter. In most cases, the quality of the windows is the first thing that is believed to be the cause of this phenomenon. However, this problem is often created by an undesirable accumulation of moisture in the house.
The ambient temperature of a house has great influence on the moisture levels in the air. In warm temperatures, the air can contain a greater amount of water vapor without creating condensation. Indeed, in the summer, when the humidity and temperature are high, there is no accumulation of water on the window panes. The reason is simple, yet at the molecular level : when gas ( here the air) is at higher temperatures, the molecules it contains are more distant from each other, leaving enough space for the steam. However, in winter when it’s warm inside and the temperature drops quickly, the air can no longer contain the same amount of water vapor. For this reason, it tends to be deposited on the colder surfaces, like the glass of doors and windows.
To avoid this, it is important to ensure that the relative humidity of the indoor air follows the curve of the outside temperature and to maintain a stable temperature inside the house.
To have better control over the humidity of a house, it is possible to use a hygrometer, which is an instrument for measuring the moisture in the air.
Some effective daily actions aslo help maintain a lower level of humidity in a house. Here are some tips offered by the Quebec Association of Home Builders ( APCHQ)
-Make sure your dryer has an effective evacuation system.
-Avoid temperature fluctuations inside the house
- Do not store firewood in the basement
- Limit the amount of plants inside
-Ensure that all areas that require evacuation have a grid and that it operates effectively
-Remove window screens during the cold season
-Be sure to use the fans in the kitchen and the bathroom during and after each use
- Don’t use the shower for too long
-Avoid closing the blinds or curtains in the evening
-In case of an extended absence, avoid reducing the heating in the house
-Expel excess moisture by opening a window during warmer days.
